What Is A One-Trip Shipping Container?

It’s estimated that more than a staggering 70 million shipping containers are in use worldwide, although a great many of them are no longer located on ships. In fact, some of them make only one trip before being sold to new customers for various different purposes such as storage facilities or bespoke modification projects.

Understanding the differences between used and single-trip shipping containers, and discovering more about their versatile uses, will help you make an informed decision about what to buy.

What are one-trip shipping containers?

As the name suggests, one-trip shipping containers have been used to transport goods overseas only once before being sold. They’re the next best thing to brand-new shipping containers, which are relatively rare, and offer customers great long-term value.

Most single-trip shipping containers in the UK were manufactured in the far east and then shipped to the UK.

Why are shipping containers used only once?

Using a container only once for shipping goods negates the need for the unit to be delivered back to its original location for re-use, which is costly and time-consuming. It also means loading and unloading is done only once, so there’s no need for additional handling. So as well as saving costs, one-time use shipping containers improve efficiency within the shipping industry.

Not only that, a single-use container will always be in pristine condition, ensuring important cargo is well protected.

One-trip versus used shipping containers

Whilst single-trip shipping containers have only been used for one international shipment, used shipping containers have usually been used many times, and may even have reached the end of their lifespan for these purposes. As such, there are several important differences between the two.

Condition

One-trip shipping containers and used shipping containers vary significantly in terms of their condition. One-trip containers are usually in excellent condition, almost as new. Due to their very limited use, they have suffered from little wear and tear and they don’t have substantial rusting or dents, and as such, they are structurally sound. Used shipping containers, on the other hand, have been exposed to the elements and various handling situations, As such, they are likely to display this type of damage and could be structurally unsound. However, used containers for sale in the Europe have undergone inspections to ensure they meet structural integrity standards. These inspections verify that the containers are fit for use and safe for various applications.

Cost

The cost of a shipping container is influenced by its condition and history of use. As they’re almost new and in very good condition, a one-trip shipping container typically costs more than a used one.

Our ‘as new’ one-ship shipping containers can start as low as £1,700 and go up to around £14,400, depending on the size and type of shipping container, whereas brand new containers can cost between £3,000 to £20,000 or more. One-trip containers are a great investment if you’re looking for a reliable and long-lasting unit that doesn’t require any immediate repairs.

Used shipping containers generally display signs of damage and wear so they might suit smaller budgets. On average, they can be picked up for £700 to £4,000, but you may need to invest in repairs and additional maintenance, which can bump the costs up over time.

Conversion projects

As one-trip shipping containers are in a nearly new condition, they’re ideal for converting into homes, offices, swimming pools, retail spaces, and any other construction you can think of. Their structural integrity and pristine appearance mean far fewer modifications will be required for your shipping container conversion – especially if appearance is important – so the project will be easier and quicker to complete.

Used shipping containers are far more likely to have dents, rust, and structural issues, resulting in additional, more complicated modifications which can prolong the process. So although they’re cheaper to buy, the costs associated with this additional work are worth bearing in mind.
